MILWAUKEE SPEED SQUARE & ROOF ANGLES

Most carpenters use this square... but don't actually understand it. Master roof pitch, degree scales, 6:12 rafter cutting, 90° geometry, mental math, wrong cut numbers, and Speed Square vs. Framing Square with Marcos De Mello.

MILWAUKEE SPEED SQUARE & ROOF PITCH SIMULATOR

Select any standard roof pitch (e.g. 6/12 pitch) to calculate exact degree angle, plumb cut angle, rafter length multiplier, and visual square markings.

Pro Tip: On a Speed Square, the Pivot Point rests on the edge of the timber. Pivoting the square until the desired pitch line aligns with the timber edge instantly reveals the exact plumb cut line!

DAY 1 — 4 STEPS TO UNDERSTANDING ROOF ANGLES
1
Locate the Pivot Hinge: The corner where the 90° angle meets the T-lip edge is your Pivot Point. This point must stay pinned tight against the timber edge when rotating.
2
Understand Pitch vs. Degree Scales: The outer curved edge has two scales: DEGREE (0° to 90°) and COMMON RAFTER PITCH (1/12 to 30/12).
3
Rotate to Desired Pitch: Pin the pivot point against the timber edge and rotate the square until your target pitch (e.g. 6/12) aligns with the SAME timber edge.
4
Mark Plumb Line: Draw along the vertical lip edge of the square. That line is your 100% accurate plumb cut for your rafter!
MILWAUKEE SQUARE ADVANTAGES
Laser Etched High-Visibility Markings: Milwaukee speed squares feature precision laser-etched markings that never rub off in harsh jobsite conditions.
1-1/2" Frame Notch: The internal scribe notches allow quick 2x lumber ripping and stud edge marking.
Precision Anodized Aluminum: Thick solid aluminum body prevents bending when dropping on concrete slabs.

DAY 1 QUIZ: SPEED SQUARE BASICS

Question 1 of 1: When marking a 6/12 pitch rafter plumb cut, which point on the speed square must stay pinned against the edge of the wood beam while pivoting?
