THE HALVING PATTERN

Every step in carpentry fractions is simply cut in half! Memorize this sequence to calculate decimals in your head on the jobsite.

1 (Whole Inch) 1.0000 100%
1/2" 0.5000 50%
1/4" 0.2500 25%
1/8" 0.1250 12.5%
1/16" 0.0625 6.25%
1/32" (The Key Unit) 0.03125 3.125%
THE KEY NUMBER: 1/32 = 3.125%

To convert any decimal inch to a fraction of 32nds: Divide the decimal by 3.125% (or 0.03125) to get the exact number of 32nd tick marks!

FORMULA:
DECIMAL ÷ 0.03125 = NUMBER OF 1/32"
EXAMPLE: Convert 0.5625 to a fraction:
0.5625 ÷ 0.03125 = 18
Result: 18/32" = 9/16"
